Alfredo Emiliano Carrillo

"Don Alfredo Emiliano Carrillo, a gentleman, a graduate of a great college, Holy Cross in Massachusetts, as I am, and he has fine courage. He is muy hombre! Muy valiente!" (Stated by brother Juan Jose; in Leo Carrillo's book, "The California I Love" 1961)

We will not forget
Alfredo's courage was proven in 1883 when he played an important part in hunting down and killing two of the worst bandits of the West, Red Jack Elmer & Charles "Killer" Hensley. Speaking of the daring bravery and hardships endured by Sheriff Paul, Deputy Sheriff Alfredo Carrillo and others of the posse, a newspaper wrote, "Thus the territory has been rid of one of the worst gangs ever organized in the West and the people should not forget those who risked their lives in the interest of law and order." (The Star, Tucson, AZ, Oct 5, 1883; reprinted in AZ Weekly Citizen, Tucson, 1 Nov 1884)

Stories of Strength & Bravery
News Clipping (Sep 1904)
"Favorable to Strength and Long Life.
That the physical powers of man and the horse reach their acme in California is being demonstrated more and more as the years pass by." ...
"Alfredo Carrillo, who died at Santa Monica the other day, when a young man and a deputy sheriff rode an ordinary California broncho one hundred and twenty miles from sun-up to sun-down, the indorsements on the processes proving the distances and the rider weighing two hundred and twenty-five pounds at the time, the broncho proving none the worse for his trip. What is the secret of this wonderful vitality of man and beast, particularly in the southern end of the state?" ... (Los Angeles Herald, Sunday, 25 September 1904, p.6)

Alfredo's nephew, actor Leo Carrillo, shared stories of "Tio Alfredo" Carrillo in The California I Love, published 1961.

In the early 1880s, two of the most feared and notorious bandits who ever lived, Red Jack Elmer & Charles "Killer" Hensley, terrorized communities, including Alfred Carrillo's own Santa Monica, California. Alfred followed their movements into Arizona where he joined Sheriff Bob Paul. Then in August 1883, after the outlaw gang robbed a stage coach between Florence and Globe, Arizona, Paul & Alfredo, along with a posse of five others, hunted down and finally killed the desperadoes in a Pima County shootout in Oct 1883. Alfred's own accounts appear in newspapers of the time. (Arizona Weekly Citizen, Tucson, AZ, Oct 5th & 6th 1883, & the Star, Oct 5th. News of the shootout was published across the country.)

Deputy Sheriff Alfredo E. Carrillo is included in the book When Law Was in the Holster: The Frontier Life of Bob Paul, by John Boessenecker, 2012 (pages 171, 205, 232, 235-36, 251, 253-254).
