María Matilde Carrillo y Millán was born at Loreto Presidio, Baja California New Spain, about 1747. She was the daughter of soldado Juan Carrillo y Pérez and Lucía Efigenia Millán y Martín (1703?-1758). She married soldado José Joaquín Arce y Velasco in Loreto about 1788. She died at San Juan Capistrano in December 1850 and was buried in the mission cemetery on December 16. She was 103 years old when she died. During her lifetime she had witnessed Spain's colonization of Alta California in 1769, Mexico's independence in 1821, the American invasion in 1846, and, just shortly before her death, California's entry into the Union as the 31st state on September 9, 1850.
