FORMER BIG HOLLOW RESIDENT PASSES

Ruth Elinor Aiello, 81, of Fairfield Glade, TN, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2003, after a long illness. A Funeral Mass was held April 29 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, in Fairfield Glade, TN, with Father Greg Neuzil, Father Phillip Thoni and Deacon Mark Frederick officiating.

Mrs. Aiello is the former Ruth Elinor Carson who was born August 20, 1921 in Big Hollow, Sanford, NY, the daughter of Frank Carson and Mamie M. Gardner. She is a direct descendant of the first permanent white settlers of Deposit, John Hulce and Abigail Williams and the Founder of Windsor, David Hotchkiss and his wife Peninah Peck.

She attended the one room schoolhouse up on Big Hollow Road, later moving into town to live with her grandparents Samuel R. Gardner and Mary A. Fuller at 50 Elm Street and graduated from Deposit High School Class of 1940. While growing up in Deposit, she was very active in 4-H, and worked at Scott's Lake House, Brown's Drug Store, The State Theatre and Lee's Funeral Home. She left Deposit shortly after graduating and moved to New York City to become a model.

She married Chester G. Ulrich, an Army Air Corps pilot in 1943, who was shot down and killed during the D-Day Normandie Invasion. She later married Henry G. Continanza in 1946 and had two daughters. Mr. Continanza died in 1956. She married Joseph A. Aiello, a widower with a daughter and son of his own in 1957, together they had two sons and were married 46 years at the time of her death.

Ruth would return to Deposit, every year with her husband and youngest son to visit family and friends and work on their genealogy, often staying with her sister the late Hildred Mae "Billie" Seymour from Sands Creek Road in Hancock and visiting with her brother the late Harry R. Carson of Sherman, PA.

Ruth was a loving wife and mother, tireless homemaker, devoted woman of God, spending countless hours in service to the church and her community. She was a "Pink Lady" volunteering at the local hospital ICU waiting room, the public library, and the charitable thrift store. She crotchet over 600 beautiful receiving blankets for babies born to poor families at the local hospital. At Christmas, rather than exchange gifts between themselves, she and her husband provided meals, presents, trees and warm clothing for those less fortunate.

All during her long and painful illness she never complained. Her one wish was to "go home". On Saturday morning, she was brought to her home and laid in her bed. There, surrounded by her husband, children and grandchildren, she peacefully went "home" to meet her Lord in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph A. Aiello Sr. of Fairfield Glade, TN; two sons, Joseph A. Aiello Jr. of Bowie, MD and John A. Aiello of West Hollywood, CA; two daughters, D. Marie Rodgers of Albuquerque, NM and Nancy A. Granados of Olney, MD; two step-children Donna L. Pascrell of Clifton, NJ, and Gary A. Aiello of Bloomingdale, NJ; 16 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy L. Crosby of Gillette, IL and Lois E. Bailey of Inverness, FL; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were chosen from among the grandchildren, Ramon C. Granados, Philip J. Granados, Brian J. Granados, Gary Anthony Aiello II, Elizabeth Ann Rodgers, Steven M. Offutt-Aiello and Daniel L. Collini. There was a private Interment in St. Francis of Assisi Columbarium in Fairfield Glade, TN on May 2, 2003.
