She was a long-time resident of San Diego, Calif., known to her children as the real-life "Mrs. Cleaver." She was active in the community, not only supporting her children's school activities, but also giving of her time and energy to programs such as PTA, Boy Scouts and Camp Fire Girls.
In 1945, she married Johnny Carter and followed him around the world in his career in the US Navy, living in places like The Philippines and Hawaii and other West Coast ports. She became a widow following the untimely death of her husband in 1964.
She continued to provide for her family by returning to school and ultimately entered the work force as a claims adjuster for Blue Shield/Blue Cross until her retirement.
She was an avid craftsperson who loved designing and making stained glass creations and mosaics, crocheting afghans and shawls, reading, music, playing piano and painting.
In 2001, she moved to The Dalles and lived there until her death.
She is survived by a son, John L. Carter and wife Karen, The Dalles; a daughter, Janice Perkins and husband Mike, Anacortes; as well as three grandchildren, John D. Carter, Seattle; Michael Carter and his wife Alisa Stoffel, Seattle; and Katherine Carter, Houston, Texas.
She will be interred at Rose-crans National Cemetery in San Diego with her late husband. Per her wishes, there will be no ceremony. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Diabetes Association.
