SEARCH TEAMS FIND BODY OF WOMAN
The body of Edith Cartwright, 58, of Decatur Road just west of Riverton, was found at 10:50 a.m. Sunday floating in the Sangamon River a half mile north of the Rt. 38 bridge.

Night long search operations by county and state authorities were sparked at 9:15 p.m. Saturday when Miss Cartwright's car, containing her purse were found abandoned at the west end of the bridge by her brother, L.O. Cartwright, also of Decatur Road.

Miss Cartwright, an employee at Memorial Hospital for 14 years, was known to have been despondent because of ill health.

County officiers said that she left her home, which she shared with her mother, Mrs. Lottie Cartwright, at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Mrs. Cartwright became alarmed at her daughter's absence, they said, and telephoned her son at 9:10 p.m., who started driving toward Riverton and found his sister's automobile.

The authorities also said that Thomas Hewitt, whose home is near the bridge, reported that at 6:30 p.m. he saw the car approach the bridge and halt at the east end and then drive across. He said that about 10 minutes later he heard a splash, but thought it was only someone dumping refuse into the river.

On finding his sister's car, police said, Cartwright alerted police and the search began on the assumption that she might have fallen or jumped into the river.

Miss Cartwright is survived by her mother; a sister, Mrs. Fern Rodems; and her brother, L.O. Cartwright, all of R.R. 1 Springfield.

Remains are at the O'Donnell Funeral Home where services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
