When he was born he was named Grandville Charley Arnold. When his rich father left only $1 to each of the children of his first wife he changed his name to Arthur Charles Cartwright.

He married Margaret Cecilia Cederlund on 26 Sep 1936 in Chicago, Cook Co., IL. He worked as a lithographer, the process of printing from a plane surface (as a smooth stone or metal plate) on which the image to be printed is ink-receptive and the blank area ink-repellent. He worked for many years at this trade. It is thought by his family that he used his lithography skills to work with the Chicago Mob creating counterfit bills. There is no proof, but the men visiting him in the funeral home were not known to the family and appeared to be mob members.

He died of Cirrcohis of the Liver. He had been a heavy drinker for many years
