Josephine "Jo" Ann (Casey) Houska, 88, of Rapid City, passed away on Friday, November 19, 2010 at a local nursing home.
The youngest of eight children, she was born on May 16, 1922, in Vivian, SD to Joseph Franklin and Annie Elizabeth (Servoss) Casey.
Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Chamberlain where her father opened Casey Drug Company, which remains in the family today. Jo grew up in Chamberlain and graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1940.
She attended SDSU School of Pharmacy, but was unable to complete her studies because her father needed her at home to help in the store while her brothers fought in WWII. She received a Pharmacy Registered Apprentice Certificate from the State Board of Pharmacy in 1942.
On April 29, 1946, Jo married Raymond James (Jim) Houska of Chamberlain. The couple had six children and Jo was a full time mother, as well as doing home typing for St. Joseph's Indian School.
In 1957, the family moved to Rapid City where Jo was active in her children's schools, church and being a Girl Scout and Cub Scout Leader. She worked at SD Job Service from 1966 until 1968 when the family made moves to Sioux City, IA, Alliance, NE, Ely, NV, and The Dalles, OR; where Jim passed away in 1976.
Jo moved back to Rapid City to be near family and began working at SD Job Service and retired in 1985. Jo enjoyed sewing, reading, camping, fishing and baseball.
Her favorite things to do were taking rides through the Black Hills and having picnics with her children and grandchildren in the hills and at Storybook Island.
Jo was preceded in death by her parents, seven siblings, husband Jim (1976), son Jeff (2002) and grandson Jeb (2007). She is survived by sons Greg Houska (Char) Missoula, MT; Barry Houska (Pat), Rapid City; Scot Houska (Annie) Grand Junction, CO; and daughters Gail Thompson (Jim) Rapid City; and Lynn Symington, (Robert) Hillsboro, OR, 17 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. A Visitation will begin at 5PM on Sunday, November 28, 2010 at Edstrom & Rooks Funeral Services at Serenity Springs, Chapel of Tranquility with a Vigil/Rosary service at 6:30PM.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 AM on Monday, November 29 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help with Fr. Tyler Dennis presiding.
Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. The family suggests that memorials be sent to Storybook Island, 1301 Sheridan Lake Rd, Rapid City, SD 57702.
