Birth registered in Boulogne.
After his mother died in 1873, he and his brothers were sent to live with his grandfather's half-brother near Ballycastle, Co. Antrim.  He was packed off to sea at age 14, settled in Australia, went to South Africa to fight the Boer, and remained there for a time.  Later he returned to Ireland, where he was instrumental in getting Jan Smuts to mediate in the independence negotiations.  He also helped set up the Coast Life Saving Service.
He was drowned in the Grand Canal; it was thought to be accidental.
