Consort Queen and Empress. Descendant of the small Bosnian-Croatian nobility, she married Sigmund (1405), king of Hungary and son of Charles IV. In 1433, with her husband's accession to the throne, she became Empress of the Holy Roman Empire. Considered by historians to be a careerist and strong-willed woman, she attempted to install her nephew Ladislaus on the Bohemian throne through political intrigue (1437), provoking the wrath of Sigmund who imprisoned her. After the death of her husband, she was freed but exiled and deprived of all property and wealth. Barbara Celije devoted herself for the rest of her life to occult practices and to alchemy, and is also remembered for alleged transformations of vile metal into gold coins. She died of the plague that raged across Europe at that time.
