In 1886, Florence immigrated from Ireland to Laramie, Wyoming where she met and married Morris/Maurice B Chandler, b. Aug. 15, 1858 in Chester, Pennsylvania to John Chandler and Amy Kirk Chandler. Morris was a civil engineer who worked for a North American railway company
On July 23, 1888, Morris and Forence had a son, Raymond Thornton Chandler, born in Chicago, Illinois. Raymond became a famous novelist and screenwriter. His protagonist, Phillip Marlowe (played onscreen by Humphrey Bogart), became synonymous with private detective.
In 1889, Florence took baby Ray to Ireland to meet her parents. Florence and Raymond returned October 27th, arriving in New York on the Servia via Queenstown, Ireland and Liverpool, England.
By 1895-6, the Chandlers were living near the Fitts in Plattsmouth, Nebraska, and Raymond attended the East 4th Ward Plattsmouth City School, moving to live in Chicago soon after school started, as noted on his school records.
By 1900, Raymond and his mother were back in Plattsmouth living with her older sister, Francis Grace and husband, Ernest Fitt, according to the June 1900 U.S. Census. Morris Chandler was not listed, so sometime between 1897 and 1900 his parents split, or Morris/Maurice died.
In late June of 1900, Florence and Raymond traveled to Montreal, Quebec, Canada and on June 30, 1900, boarded the Lake Superior bound for Liverpool, London and Dulwich College. Raymond entered Dulwich College as a day student in the Fall.
In 1904, Raymond graduated from Dulwich. In April of
1905, he traveled to Paris to study French. In 1906, he moved to Germany to continue language studies. In spring of
1907, he returned to England where he became naturalized. In the summer, he passed the Civil Service exam and took a job as a clerk in the Admiralty.
In 1908, Raymond worked as a literary journalist in London, contributing to the Academy & Westminster Gazette. In 1909. he left the Admiralty and worked briefly as a Daily Express reporter
In 1912, he returned to America, meeting the Lloyds on the SS Merion (arrives Philadelphia July 10th). His destination was Omaha. He finally settled in San Francisco, working odd jobs. Enrolled in night school bookkeeping course. Florence, arrived in Philadelphia on the SS Merion, December 4th. Her destination was listed as Berkeley/San Francisco.
In 1913, Raymond and his mother traveled to Los Angeles, where, with the help of Warren E Lloyd, Secretary for the Los Angeles Creamery, whom he met on the SS Merion, Raymond got a job as a bookkeeper for the Los Angeles Creamery.
