Services for Helen Charisse McDaniel, 72, a noted Indianapolis dancer, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in Flanner and Buchanan Broad Ripple Mortuary and at 10 a.m. in St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. She died Friday in Methodist Hospital.

Born in Paris, France, she studied ballet with the Paris Opera, along with her mother, brothers, and sisters. The family later formed a dance troupe that toured the world and appeared at the Hippodrome at New York City with Al Jolson. Mrs. McDaniel moved to Indianapolis in 1951 and began to give dance lessons. She sponsored an annual show at the former Harry E. Wood High School, donating the proceeds to the athletic department. In later years, proceeds went to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. She was a member of the Dance Masters of America, Chicago Dance Masters, and South Group Women's Symphony Society.

Survivors include her husband, James F. McDaniel; five sisters, Katherine Tucker, Etienne Tucker, Nanette Tucker, Lucille Charisse, Marie Charisse, and Rita Charisse; and two brothers, Noel and Andre Charisse.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the mortuary.
