He was the son of Alfred and Irene Charlton, and graduated from Wesleyan University.

Charlton was a pilot with the 8th Fighter Command, 78th Fighter Group, 83rd Fighter Squadron. He was flying P-47C #41-6411, nicknamed 'Muscle Bound', on a fighter sweep over Holland. The plane developed fuel problems and Charlton tried to make it back to base but finally had to bail out over the ocean. Search and rescue was unable to find him.

Because his body was never recovered, Charlton's name is also inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Cambridge American Cemetery in England.

He received the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
