Mrs. Helen Ashworth Dies at 98
HEUVELTON-Mrs. Helen Ashworth, 98, widow of R. George Ashworth, died at the home of her son, Harold, of the Pope Mills road, at 1 this morning following an illness of ten days. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Fox funeral home with Rev. Albert Cameron, pastor, St. Lawrence Valley parish, and Rev. William Masters, Methodist pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home tonight and Sunday afternoon and evening. Besides her son, Harold, she is survived by a son, Frederick, of Heuvelton; a brother, Alfred T. Chase, of Stanwood, Wash., six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Born Sept. 12, 1869, at Elmira, a daughter of Frederick M. and Carrie Wilson Chase, she was graduated from Elmira college for women in 1891 and attended Cowles Art school, Boston, Mass. She taught at Fairfield military academy for two years. She was married to R. George Ashworth, also a teacher at the academy, in June, 1897. A year later they moved to the Ashworth farm on the Pope Mills road, where they lived over 30 years. In 1932 the couple moved to Heuvelton where Mr. Ashworth died Sept. 8, 1957. Mrs. Ashworth continued to live at that address until her illness. She was the oldest member of the Heuvelton Methodist church, a member of the Women's Society of Christian service and the Women's Christian Temperance union.
