Civil War Union Army Officer. He was mustered in as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company A, 2nd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on May 2, 1861, and served until he resigned on December 12, 1861.

He was then commissioned as Major and Aide-de-Camp, US Volunteers on August 20, 1862, serving until resignation on April 16, 1863 to accept a commission of Lieutenant Colonel, Assistant Inspector General, serving until August 10, 1863.

His wife, Eleanor, was the daughter of Major General Erasmus D. Keyes.
