NORTHAMPTON - Dorothy G. (Christensen) Andros, 91, of Fairfield Avenue in Florence, died Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at Linda Manor Extended Care Facility in Leeds.

Born Dec. 21, 1919, in Sioux City, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late William and Elsie (Sonneborn) Christensen. Dorothy graduated from Central High School in Sioux City and received her bachelor's degree from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Ind.

She began her teaching career in Indiana at the Porter County School and, after moving to Northampton in 1945 she taught in the Northampton public schools. She taught at the former Vernon School and also at the Jackson Street School. She retired in 1981.

Dorothy had a lifelong devotion to her family and her church. She had been an active member of the former Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hatfield and was currently a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Holyoke. She was the widow of Carl Andros who predeceased her in 1990.

Dorothy is survived by her three children, Judith Andros of Manhattan, N.Y., Carl W. Andros of West Hartford, Conn., and Thomas Andros of Northampton; her daughter-in-law, Pamela M. Andros of West Hartford; her grandson, Carl H. Andros of West Hartford; and her sister, Norma Coiner of Waynesboro, Va.

She was also predeceased by her brother, Richard Christensen.

The family will receive friends at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 34 Jarvis Ave., Holyoke, on Thursday, March 10, from 10-11 a.m. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m. with burial in Spring Grove Cemetery, Florence.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the VNA/Hospice of Cooley Dickinson, P.O. Box 329, 01060, or to St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Pease and Gay Funeral Home of Northampton has been entrusted with Dorothy's arrangements.
