A Record of the Achievements of Her People in the Making of a Commonwealth and the Building of a Nation · Volume 1 - By Cuyler Reynolds · 1914:
(VII) Stephen Dusenbury Durland, eldest child of John C. and Adeline ( Dusenbury) Durland, was born in 1834, in Monticello. He attended the local schools of that town and Monticello Academy. He taught school for some years and later was a farmer near the village of Monticello. He was among the patriots who responded early to the call of his country: for defense of its honor, and enlisted in 1861 in the One Hundred and Forty-third New York Volunteer Infantry, serving in Company B, under Captain Baldwin. He died in 1864 from exposure and never returned to his native home. The family never received any definite knowledge of how or when he lost his life. His trunk was shipped home with notice of his having died . He acted as secretary or yeoman to Captain Baldwin during the war. He married Delia Hoyt, daughter of Leander and Mary (Weed ) Hoyt. Mrs. Durland survived her husband many years. She married (second) James Arkills, of Sullivan county, and has a daughter, Lena M. Arkills , born 1877, now the wife of Edward Dodd, residing in Otisville, Orange county, New York, and has two children, Grace and Agnes. Children of Stephen D. Durland : Marshall, who lived
but two years ; Leander Hoyt, mentioned below.

Originally identified as Elisha D. Clark or Cook, "143rd New York", died 22 November 1864, in the U.S. Burial Registers. Originally buried at Adairsville, Ga., and 100 yards west of railroad alongside C Haley, Daniel Bee, John Torbet, an Unknown, and Bartley Kelly. This burial area was not connected to a hospital and no apparent relationship to a battle or action. He may have died on the way to a hospital. His brother, Samuel, who served in New York Light Artillery, told of Stephen wrapping in a blanket and probably died. The New York Muster Roll says that Stephen was left at a 23rd Army Corps field hospital.
