Elizabeth Clay was a daughter of Dr. Henry Clay, III, M.D. and Rachel "Polly" Povall. She had eleven younger siblings.

Elizabeth Clay married John Bruce, Sr. on June 28, 1775 in Charlotte County, Virginia. They had sixteen children.

"Neither I, nor any of the gang I have contact with on this family has been able to find a contemporaneous use of the "Povall" name for Elizabeth, dau of Dr Henry and Rachel (Povall) Clay. No one has found a written record (Bible, will, tax, anything) that was produced between 1755 and 1835. None of the twelve siblings have middle names. My "hypothesis' is that this comes from a "clarifier" behavior that occurred among some researchers who used such "tags" to distinguish between all those people with the same names."
"Povall as a middle name for her has not been proven."
