Jean was born on December 19, 1924, in rural Delaware County to Bernard and Laura (Hansen) Cocking. She attended rural school and graduated from Manchester High School in 1941. Jean taught in rural schools and attended Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. Jean was united in marriage to Allyn F. Carrothers on July 29, 1947, at the
First Baptist Church in Manchester. Three children were born to this union. They lived in Denver, Colorado, Chicago, Illinois, and Manchester. Jean taught at Randalia, Lamont, and while teaching at Manchester, returned to Upper Iowa and received her B.A. Degree in
teaching. Jean retired from teaching in 1981. She has lived at the Good Neighbor home for three years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and a member of several Bible study groups. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, the Chicago Cubs, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Jean died at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester on Wednesday, January 18, 2006, following a short illness. She was eighty-one years of age. Survivors include three children, Ronald
Carrothers and his wife Michelle of Dunlap, Illinois, Rondalyn Hagar and her husband, Earl of Beleem, Brazil, and Renee Carrothers-Johnson and her husband, Keith of Manchester; six grandchildren, Kelly Hagar, Kimberly Hagar, Troy Johnson, Derek Johnson, Brennan Johnson, and Neal Johnson; and one brother, Walter Cocking and his wife Lois of Spirit Lake. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Laura Cocking; her husband, Allyn; and a sister, Pauline Hansel.
