Florence Bernice Code Blanc, 100, of Prairie du Sac, passed away in Sauk City on Feb. 3, 2012. Born April 17, 1911, the daughter of Joseph C. Code (1871-1922) and Sadie Heiser Code (1877-1958), Florence married Milton Lyle Blanc on June 8, 1933.

Preceded in death by her husband, Milton (1910-1992), and daughter, Christine Lee Blanc (1948-1994),

Florence is survived by her daughter, Margery Lorraine Blanc and son-in-law, Jon Gardiner Lyon of Mazomanie; her son, Paul Le Blanc and daughter-in-law, Tara Alison Shook Blanc, of Tempe, Ariz.; two grandsons, Dru Michael Blanc and his wife Tammy Blanc and Todd Samuel Blanc and his wife Isela Blanc; great-grandchildren, Allyson Blanc, Samantha Blanc, William Blanc, Alexis Blanc, Andy Blanc, Harrison Blanc, Victoria Blanc and David Slinin; grandniece Kimberly Kilcrease; her life-long friend Margaret George of Waukee, Iowa; and close friends Renee Wilson and Donna Fredricks.

Florence leaves behind a true legacy of devotion to her family: the Codes from West Des Moines, Iowa, formerly Valley Junction, and the Blancs from Des Moines. Although remembered for her snickerdoodle cookies, lemon meringue pie, pot roasts and an uncanny ability to see right through you, her tangible legacy is a living trust for her beloved alma mater, Valley High School in West Des Moines, Iowa, which provides scholarships for deserving students annually.

A further contribution was inspired by her love of cooking, her German heritage, and living in a one-room apartment during the depression. Potato peelings flushed down a toilet, and the subsequent plumbing back-up, prompted her husband, Milton, and his father, Samuel O. Blanc, to build and later manufacture the Roto-Rooter drain-cleaning machine, which spawned a new industry. Later investing in the franchising of Roto-Rooter helped Florence build the resources she used to fund many worthy causes throughout her life, including the Valley High School scholarship. Along with her husband, Florence was instrumental in the community philanthropy dedicated to Milton's mother, Lettie Jensen, in Amherst. Florence wanted nothing more from life than time with family and friends and to enjoy the world around her. She was content and peaceful, loved ducks, geese, and eagles, farms with barns and silos, rocks and bonsai trees. She was an avid reader, loved to play cards and backgammon and painted and crocheted until her passing. Aging with grace, Florence was an inspiration to those she touched. Commenting often that she was going to live forever, in our hearts, and through the hundreds of students she has assisted, she will.

A memorial gathering will be held at Resthaven Cemetery, 801 19th Street, West Des Moines, Iowa, on April 28, 2012.

In lieu of flowers, donations for the purchase of large print books in Florence's memory may be sent to the Prairie du Sac Library, 560 Park Avenue, Prairie du Sac, WI 53578.
