Mary Alice (Coleman) Barnes- Martin, age 98 years, 7 months and 1 day, of Herrin, passed away at 4:15am on Friday, May 10, 2013 at her home in Herrin.

Mary Alice Coleman was born October 9, 1914 in Fordville (now Energy), the daughter of David Moses and Lura Ann (Gallemore) Coleman, during the time that her father was the mayor of Fordville.

Her early life was spent growing up in the Herrin area, attending the Sunnyside School (west of Herrin), and then Herrin Township High School. There she excelled in algebra and home economics, especially in sewing and cooking, which served her well all of her life.

In the early 1930's, she befriended Cecil Barnes (of the Hurricane area, near Carterville), and they were married on December 25, 1933, in Marion. Cecil's occupations led him to work for International Harvester in East Moline, Illinois, where they migrated for a time, but they came back to Herrin about 1939, where he began to work as an independent produce (over-the-road) trucker, and they both spent much time together as he travelled up and down the roads, transporting produce.

An expert seamstress, Mary was later employed by Smoler Brothers clothing manufacturers, and served for many years as one of their primary instructors. After her term of experience with that firm, she was later employed by the Town Shop of Herrin, where she altered ready-made clothing to fit almost any shaped young girl or lady. Her ability with pin and needle was extraordinary, and was always much in demand in Herrin.

During this period, she was quite active in the Herrin chapter of the Business and Professional Women's Club (BPW). She was also quite active in the Hermegi (Herrin Methodist Girls) Class of First Methodist Church, and active in many charitable works.

In retirement, she and Cecil lived for a few years in a lovely cottage overlooking a neck of the Lake of Egypt, entertaining family and friends on a regular basis, but they returned to Herrin about 1978, to be closer to the families. Another post-retirement occupation of hers was to be a bus driver for the Williamson County Programs for Aging, at her sister Earline's behest, and she served many of the county's aged in transport, befriending many of her riders.

At her husband Cecil's death on January 8, 1989, after a happy marriage of 55 years and 14 days, she was bereft of her husband's companionship. But six years later, a much earlier teen-age friendship with Raymond Doyle Martin (A recent widower) sprang anew, and they were married at Pekin, on July 20, 1995. She and Ray spent a few years living quietly in Pekin, before they relocated to her home in Herrin in 1998. Ray died at Herrin on December 10, 1998, and is buried in Pekin, next to his first wife, Alva Doyne Compton, who died in 1994. Mary and Ray's three year marriage was a great joy to both of them, and to most of their families.

Survivors include her nephews Glenn Tripp and Terry McEvers of Herrin, and James McEvers of Makanda; nieces Marianne Lindsay of Byron, Georgia, Nancy McEvers of Herrin, and Patricia Laveau of Raleigh, North Caolina; grand- nieces Michelle Rumer of Little Elm, Texas, Amanda Tripp and Shellianne McEvers of Herrin; grand- nephews Sean McEvers of Herrin and Aaron Tripp of Marion; two great grand- nephews Pv 2 Jeremy Cecil Sellers stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado, and Cameron Michael McEvers of Herrin, one step great grand- niece Christina Sellers Ezell of San Angelo, Texas, and one step great grand- nephew Brian Sellers of Macon, Georgia. Also surviving are her step-son Richard Martin of Crystal Like, Illinois and her step-daughter Carol Martin of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Cecil and Ray, her parents, her sisters Vallie Maud (Coleman) Tripp, Hilda Hazel (Coleman) Miller, Lillie Earline (Coleman) McEvers, one brother Moses Glen Coleman, one niece Verla Jean (Tripp) Cravens, and two nephews Ronald Gene Coleman and Donald Coleman.

Funeral services will be held at 11am on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin with Rev. Sherry Black officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville, where she will be interred next to her first husband. Visitation will be held from 5-8pm on Monday, May 13, 2013 at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.

For those who prefer, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois. Envelopes will be available and accepted at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home; 201 S 13th Street; Herrin, IL 62948.
