MARION ELIZABETH HAIRE (PLUMB/COLLIN)

Marion passed away peacefully at Edson Long Term Care on December 31, 2014 in her 95th year. Marion was born in 1919 in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, to George Edward Collin and Josephine Elizabeth Collin (McGuire).

The Collin family moved to Edson in the 1920’s and Marion attended school at the Edson School (now the Red Brick Schoolhouse). In the Depression, Marion worked as a telephone operator at Switzer’s Drugstore in downtown Edson and saved so she could attend Normal School in Edmonton. Her first teaching placement was the one room “Blue Hills School” at Flatbush in Northern Alberta. In 1942, she married Frank Plumb. They spent the winter of 1944 working together at a logging camp on the North Road, ten miles north of Edson. Marion was camp cook. Her son, Tom, was born in Edson that winter. Then the army posted Frank to the east, so they moved to London, Ontario, where two daughters, Ada and Irma Marion, were born. Marion worked in the family trucking business in London, then in the tourist business in Grand Bend on Lake Huron. She also taught for a number of years. Marion returned to Edson to nurse her parents in their last years in Edson ever since. In memory of her parents, Marion and other family members began the Collin Bursary Fund to give an annual cash award to a local student in the health care field. This Bursary continued for over twenty years and helped many students. Marion was a member of Edson United Church and also a loyal supporter of its Surprise Lake Camp. She was a host with Canada World Youth, a member of the Rebekahs and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #51. As the oldest of seven children, Marion was part of a large family. She became the family historian, and greatly enjoyed keeping in touch with friends and family members by letter and phone.

Marion was predeceased by her husband, Frank Plumb (1977) and her second husband, Clifford Haire of Edson (1997). Marion was also predeceased by her beloved sister, Elaine Cook (Collin), and her brothers: Merton, Mac, George, and Lloyd Collin.

Cremation has taken place at the Edson Funeral Home. Interment and a memorial service will be held in the spring. Donation in remembrance of Marion can be made to Long Term Care at the Edson Healthcare Centre or to the charity of your choice.
