LOMPOC, Jan. 17 - Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. tomorrow in La Purisima Concepcion Catholic Church for the Rev. John J. Collins, pastor of the church, who died unexpectedly yesterday morning at the parish house. When Father Collins did not appear for Mass yesterday morning, parishioners investigated and found he had died a few hours before. Father Collins served as an Army chaplain in both European and Pacific theaters during World War II. He leaves his mother, residing in his native Ireland. Solemn Mass of Requiem Wednesday, 10 a.m., at St. Vibiana's Cathedral in Los Angeles. Interment, Calvary. Cunningham & O'Connor, directors."
From the Los Angeles Times, Jan. 18, 1955. Ordained at Thurles for the Los Angeles diocese in 1933, he served at St. Elizabeth's parish in Van Nuys, St. Augustine parish in Culver City, and Sts. Peter and Paul parish in Wilmington. During World War II, he served a combat chaplain with the U.S. Air Corps and the Army in England, France, Germany and Japan for ten years, from 1941 to 1951. He then served at Nativity parish in El Monte before going to Lompoc.
