Graveside services to celebrate the life of Constance Colt Bassett, 97, of Camden will be held Thursday, March 8, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Newark, NJ. Memorials may be made in Mrs. Bassett's memory to the Kershaw County Library, 1304 Broad Street, Camden, SC 29020 or The National Steeplechase Museum, Post Office Box 2424, Camden, SC 29020.
Constance died at home Monday, February 27, 2012. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Julia Whitaker Colt. Constance grew up in Geneseo, New York, riding and enjoying the freedom of country life. As a child and young adult she traveled with her family to Europe, living in Switzerland for several years. While there she took up mountaineering and, with guides, climbed many difficult peaks. Before the War, the family relocated to Camden, South Carolina where Constance again was able to ride and hunt.
At the beginning of World War II, Constance was in New York City working for the Free French which operated radio stations broadcasting to occupied French. Her family and friends asked her to move to Washington, DC where her language skills were needed at a new agency, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), which after the war became the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). In 1943, Constance traveled to Tallahassee, Florida to marry William B.K. Bassett who was in the Air Force awaiting deployment to the Pacific Theatre.
After the war Mr. and Mrs. Bassett lived on a dairy farm in Pottersville, New Jersey, where they raised their four children. Constance was an officer in the family corporation. In 1973 the couple retired to Camden, South Carolina. Mr. Bassett died here in 1991.
Constance is survived and missed by her four children and five grandchildren.
