VERNA MAE BELCHER, age 96, of Sparta passed away Friday, August 8, 2014 at Bennington Glen.


A lifelong resident of the Sparta community, she was born in Columbus on January 19, 1918 to the late Milo J. and Ethel E. (Baker) Condit. In 1936 she graduated from Sparta High School, a class of 13.


Verna married Raymond Belcher in 1936 in Greenup, Kentucky. Together they shared 46 wonderful years, raising a family and operating Belcher's General Store in Sparta. Sadly Raymond passed away on July 2, 1982.


For a brief time she also worked as a school bus driver for the Highland School System. She attended both the Sparta United Methodist Church and Advent Christian Church, but was member of the Glory Baptist Church. At the age of 93 Verna was re-baptized.


She enjoyed bingo, sewing, crafts and ceramics. Verna was also a member of the Get Together Hen Club of Sparta. She formerly bowled at the Mt. Vernon Titled Lanes and played a mean game of dealer's choice poker.


Active in every way, she treasured time spent attending the various activities and ball games of her grandchildren. Social and compassionate, she liked things her way. With a spunky spirit and warm smile, one could not help but take a liking to Verna. She was a proud Mother, who always put then needs of her family first.


Those left to cherish her memory include her beloved children Don (Gladys) Belcher of Sparta, Ken (Marlene) Belcher of Lima, Debbie (Bill) Young of Marengo, Carla Emmons of Marion, 15 grandchildren Shad (Joyce) Weikel, Shawn (Kelly) Weikel, Marsha (David) Welle, Greg (Kathy) Belcher, Sherri (William) Johnson, Tim (Teresa) Belcher, Todd (Shannon) Belcher, 36 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.


She was proceeded by her daughter and son-in-law Karen and Roger Weikel, brothers Earl, Milo, and Eldon Condit as well as sisters, Violet Lee and Donna Fox.


Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Monday at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR's 3 at 61, Sunbury, where services will follow 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, with Pastor Jeff Deel officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in Chesterville.
