Centenarian Dies
Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Friday in the O'Connor Memorial Chapel for Charles James Cooney, 100, a former resident of 1301 4th Ave. S. His funeral will be at 9 a.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, followed by burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Cooney died Wednesday in a local rest home. He was born on Dec. 25, 1882 at Williamsburg, Iowa. In 1891 his family moved to Casselton, N.D., where he attended school.
He learned the carpenter's trade working with a contractor. In 1910 he came to Havre, where he started work for the Great Northern Railway, and the following year he was promoted to bridge and builders foreman.
Cooney and Nora Bilderback were married at Glasgow in March 1916. The couple homesteaded north of Saco in 1918 and in 1920 moved to Wolf Point, where they lived until coming to Great Falls in 1938. Cooney returned to the Great Northern and retired as shop carpenter in the bridge and building department in Dec. 1951.
The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary March 1966 and Mrs. Cooney died in October of that year. He remained in Great Falls, living alone until 1976, then living with his son until entering a nursing home in June 1980.
His daughter, Alice, died in 1938 and his son, David, in 1979. Cooney is survived by his daughter-in-law, Dorothy Cooney, and a great niece, Mrs. Carl (Pearl) Hansen, both of Great Falls.
