Donald M. Cooper ONEONTA — Donald M. Cooper, 84, of Oneonta, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. Donald was born on July 25, 1928, in Johnson City, but was raised in Unadilla and Sidney. He was the son of the late Joseph and Dewey (Lampman) Cooper. He married Anna Pasko on May 23, 1954, in St. James Episcopal Church in Oneonta. She predeceased him on Dec. 21, 2011. Don was a member of St. James’ Episcopal Church in Oneonta. He was past president and secretary of the Sixth Ward Athletic Club in Oneonta and a longtime Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 24. He was a founding member of the Catskill Astronomical Society. He served his country during the Korean War as a member of the United States Army 1st Armored Division, the “Big Red One.” He was also an avid New York Giants fan. Don is survived by his son, Phillip Cooper and his wife, Tina of Oneonta; and his beloved granddaughter, Emily Cooper. He is also survived by his nieces, Mary Powell, Rose Anne Pirone and her husband, William “Bud” and their children and Elizabeth Powell; his nephews, Christopher Powell, Frederick Powell and his wife, Susan and their children, Ana and Heather; and niece, Linda Bradley and her husband, Ed; and great friend, Claude Baldwin and his wife, Reva. Donald was predeceased by his parents; his wife; his sister, Pauline Hoag; and his sister-in-law, Mary Powell and her husband, Fred. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at noon on Saturday, Nov. 10, at St. James’ Episcopal Church in Oneonta with Fr. Kenneth E. Hunter, pastor, officiating. June Sheehan will be the organist and Mary Anne Ross will be the vocalist for the Mass. Interment will follow in the Oneonta Plains Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta, at which time the family will be in attendance. Don had recently been living at Otsego Manor in Cooperstown, a wonderful place where residents come to live, not to just fade away.
