COOPERSTOWN, NY — The Rev. F. Newton Cooper, 91, of Cooperstown and Waverly, and formerly of New Port Richey, Fla., went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004. He died peacefully at his home in Waverly, surrounded by his loving family.

Rev. Cooper was born Feb. 21, 1913, in the Cooperstown area, the son of Floyd N. and Sara J. Cooper.

He married Elinore Walrath in the United Methodist Church in Cooperstown on Aug. 17, 1943. Elinore predeceased him on March 17, 1995.

He is survived by his son, Floyd N. Cooper Jr. of Palm Harbor, Fla.; his son, Robert Cooper of New Port Richey, Fla., and Waverly, his son, William W. Cooper and his wife, Sue, of Ashland City, Tenn.; and by his daughter, Dorothy E. Warner and her husband, Lee, of Waverly. Rev. Cooper is also survived by a sister-in-law, Helen Cooper of Seattle, Wash., the wife of his late brother, A. Lee Cooper; his sister-in-law, Gladys Walrath of Ilion, and his beloved grandchildren, Lisa Vanderhoof and her husband, John; Amy Stotler and her husband, Greg; John Cooper and his wife, Tasha; Paul Cooper and his wife; Mark Cooper; and two stepgrandchildren, Dr. John Hammons, and Clinton Hammons as well as by six equally beloved great-grandchildren, Ciara, Trevor and Ethen Stotler, and Victoria, Andrew and Riley Cooper. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, James W. Cooper, A. Lee Cooper, Russell Cooper and Leon P. Cooper, as well as by his sister, Flora (Cooper) Olmstead.

Rev. Cooper was a 1935 graduate of Cooperstown High School and a 1936 graduate of Wyoming Seminary Preparatory School in Kingston, Pa. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Hartwick College in Oneonta in 1940 and his master of divinity degree from Drew University School of Theology in Madison, N.J., in 1943.

Rev. Cooper was a certified high school English teacher as well as an ordained United Methodist minister, and in keeping with Methodist tradition, served many different congregations until his retirement in 1980. Among the many congregations he served were Sanitaria Springs, Edmeston, Castle Creek, Westover/Johnson City, Newark Valley, Nichols/Lounsberry, in New York and Sayre, Dunmore, Carbondale and German in Pennsylvania. He also served as an interim pastor in Cooperstown and Schulyer Lake.

In addition to his ministerial duties, Rev. Cooper served on numerous boards and agencies throughout the Methodist Wyoming Conference.

Rev. Cooper was an avid gardener, taking great pleasure in each of the Lord's many creations. He loved to read and camp, and took his family on numerous camping excursions. He took great pleasure in and particularly enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends in the Waverly area from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 3, at the Lowery Funeral Home in Athens, Pa.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 5, at the Cooperstown United Methodist Church, Chestnut Street, Cooperstown, with the Rev. Herbert Bowen and the Rev. Sundar Samuel co-officiating. The family will receive friends in the Cooperstown area at the Methodist Church on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m.

Burial will follow in the Milford Cemetery, Milford.
