Death Takes E. R. Corbett

Elliott Ruggles Corbett, civic leader, financier and member of a prominent Portland family, died at his home Thursday morning of a heart illness. He was 78 years old and lived a 01600 SW Greenwood Rd. Mr. Corbett was vice president of the Corbett Investment Co.

Memorial service will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Riverview Chapel with the Dr. Richard M. Steiner, minister of the First Unitarian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Mr. Corbett was active with his two brothers, Hamilton F., and the late Henry L., in the family business, involving the ownership and management of building and real estate.

Portland Financier Elliott R. Corbett Dies Of Heart Illness In Home at 78

Elliott R. Corbett, who was born in Portland June 29, 1884, attended Portland Academy and was graduated from Harvard University in 1907.

Mr. Corbett who died Thursday, was the son of the late Henry Jaggar and Helen Ladd Corbett. One grandfather was Oregon U.S. Sen. Henry Winslow Corbett, who came to Portland in 1850. The other grandfather was William Ladd, banker.

Mr. Corbett was active in civic affairs and served as chairman of many charitable organizations. He began his financial career in 1907 as a member of the staff of First National Bank. In 1918 he was appointed assistant cashier and later advanced to vice president, serving in that capacity from 1919 to 1930. He was director from 1912-1932.
His business and professional career included a directorship of the Livestock State Bank, 1914-1918. He also was director of Portland Home Telephone Co., 1911-1918, and director of the American Mail Ltd., 1947-1953.
In World War I he served as a first lieutenant in the field artillery, stationed at Camp Zachary Taylor, Kentucky.

Mr. Corbett's civic and other associations included a life membership in the Oregon Historical Society of which he had been director since 1942; a life membership of the Arlington Club, Multnomah Athletic Club, University Club and the Harvard Club of New York.
He was a director of the Portland Library Association, 1911-1918; director of Portland Community Chest, 1935-1945; president Portland Community Chest, 1943-1944; director of Oregon War Chest, 1943-1945; chairman of the Multnomah County Relief League; chairman of Portland Committee War Finance; an organizer of the Portland Chapter of the American Red Cross; chairman , Portland chapter, U. S. Committee for Care of European Children; trustee, Portland Association of Building Owners and Managers, and later became president of the building owners group.

Survivors include the widow, Alta Smith Corbett; five daughters, Lady (Caroline) Macadam wife of Sir Ivison Macadam of London; Mrs. John P. (Gretchen) Trommald, Mrs. Donald E. (Lesley) Forster and Mrs. Richard J. (Lucy) Marlitt, all of Portland; and Mrs. Ralph R. (Alta) Thomas, Surf Pines, Gearhart; a brother, Hamilton F.; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
