Eugene Wilkinson Crittenden was born in Frankfort, KY, on July 3, 1832. He commanded the 12th Kentucky Cavalry (U.S.) during the Civil War and transferred to the Regular Army to serve with the 5th U.S. Cavalry during the Indian Wars. He was commander of Fort Bowie, Arizona, when he died on August 1, 1874 (his headstone says "1873"). He was married to Laura Bacon.
