Mary Crittenden was the daughter of Reverend L.B. Crittenden. In 1872, she and her father founded a missionary school and academy for boys and girls. The school was originally located in Bozeman, but in 1874 it moved to Manhattan, Montana. The name of the school was the Gallatin Valley Female Seminary. Mary Crittenden was principal of the school until her marriage to E.M. Davidson in 1877.
