She was born in Portland, a daughter of Arthur J. and Margaret (Silke) Cullinan. She attended the South Portland schools, graduating from South Portland High School. She attended Gorham State Teachers College, graduating with a BS in Primary Education. She later earned her Master's Degree in Education from Boston University.
She taught kindergarten and first grade in local schools until her marriage to Lawrence C. Bernard (on 6/24/1961). Throughout her husband's career in education they made their home in Portsmouth, N.H., Scarborough and then Gray. Her interest in reading and children led to her involvement with the Gray Public Library, first as a volunteer and eventually as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for three terms.
She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Yarmouth. She and her husband were members of the Holy Martyrs Bowling League. She also was a former member of the Cheverus Mother's Club.
Surviving are her husband, daughter Hilary, son Peter, five grandchildren, and her sisters Eileen, Constance and Zita.
She was predeceased by a brother, Robert V. Cullinan formerly of South Portland; several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may visit on 2-6 p.m. Sunday November 16, at the Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Church, Main Street, Yarmouth.
