Giovanni was born in Italy, the son of Angeline Marie Urso and Sam Curia. Upon arrival in West Virginia, he worked as a coal miner in Harrison County. He died prematurely at age 44 - the father of eight children. He was struck by an automobile and subsequently died at St. Mary's Hospital, Clarksburg, West Virginia, according to his death certificate on record.
