She attended Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois where she met her husband, Don Floyd Cary.
She took her first job at Eli Lilly and Company, Lilly International division, while her husband was branch manager at International Harvester (later named Navistar International). She and Don moved to Terre Haute, Indiana where she was employed at radio station WBOW. They later moved back to Indianapolis where she worked at the Indiana State Medical Association for 22 years, retiring in 1991.
She enjoyed golf, swimming, water aerobics, gardening, collecting cookbooks and volunteering at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
Survivors include a sister, Betty Jane Monroe (1920-), daughter Deborah Jo King and son, Brent Alan Cary.
