According to the 1861 Wales census, Sarah Davies was born around 1817 in Llangein, Denbighshire. However, it seems more likely that she was born around 1815, as her grave marker gives her year of death as 1897 and her age as 82. Miss Davies married Evan Evans in Dolgelly (now Dolgellau) in 1839. By 1861, they were living in Tal-y-Llyn, where her husband was proprietor of the Tyn-y-Cornel hotel.
