Mrs. Florence B. Colmery, age 73, of Selbyville, DE, and Newark, DE, passed away on Monday, November 5, 2007, at the Heartland Hospice House after fighting a difficult battle with cancer.

Born on February 2, 1934 in St. Martins, MD, Florence was 1 of 7 children born to the late Edward J. Davis and Ethel C. Davis. Her family later moved to Newark, DE, where she lived many years of her life. She worked at Wilmington Trust Bank and at Haveg Corporation in Marshallton, DE. She then married Frank Speace and had 3 children. During that time, she worked at WL Gore in the office. In 1970, she married her estranged high school sweetheart, Walter L. Colmery. She had a fourth child and became a full-time homemaker. Florence was known for her big heart. Everyone, especially her nieces and nephews, enjoyed spending time with her at family reunions. Florence loved the beach. All in her family have good memories of many "fun in the sun" days spent at Fenwick Island State Park. She also loved to fish. Going out on head boats in the Indian River Inlet or fishing off the banks of Elk View Shores, she always had her rod ready to cast. Florence played on bowling leagues for several years, bowling in Newark and then Millsboro Bowling Lanes. Florence was known for walking through a patch of grass and spotting four-leaf clovers. She was a very lucky lady. Going to Delaware Park and Harrington Slots always seemed to pay off for her. One of her greatest passions was taking care of her dog, Cindy. They could be seen just about every day walking together down Route 17. A well-known neighborhood dog, Chester, an English Bull Mastiff, took a special liking to Florence. She would feed him every day and he would keep coming back, as he still does today, getting some food but missing the love of Florence.

Florence will be sadly missed by her many friends and relatives. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walt; a brother, Robert Davis; and 2 sisters, Edith Turner and Jeanette Grubb. She is survived by a brother, Edward "Jim" Davis of Northeast, MD; 2 sisters, Dorothy Phipps and husband, Gayle, of Newark, DE; and Marie Torres and husband, Tom, of Kileen, TX; son, Jeff Speace and wife, Joy, of Collingdale, PA; grandchildren, Holly, Christina, Rebekah and Tim; son, Jerry Speace and wife, Angela, of Georgetown, DE; grandsons, Barry and Tommy; son, Michael Colmery of Selbyville, DE; granddaughter, Carrie and beloved dog, Cindy; daughter, Donna Curtis and husband, Jeff, of Newark, DE; grandchildren, Crystal, Alyson and Kevin; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to family, friends, and members of Salem United Methodist Church in Selbyville for their loving cards and prayers.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am, on Friday, November 9, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where friends may call after 10 am. Interment will follow in Newark Cemetery, New Street, Newark, DE.
