Mrs. Wallace Benedict, Aged 77 Dies After a Short Illness--A Good Woman--Active In Church and Other Charities
One of the gentle old ladies of Barrington passed away from this life last Friday night and many of the older residents of the village will be sorry that her life has ended. She was Mrs. Wallace Benedict of Station street, who died at ten o'clock, after an illness since Tuesday of last week, although she has been ailing with a bronchial cough all summer.
For many years she had lived in the community and was known as a quiet home keeping woman of refinement and calm disposition. She had also been interested in the work of the Baptist church here, but had never become a member.
Mr. Benedict has been a photographer of the town for a long period of years and is now over eighty, making him one of the oldest and longest residents of the village.
The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the home, corner of Hough and Station streets, with the Rev. Edgar Woolhouse in charge of the service. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery. Mrs. Elizabeth Houghtaling of Cary, a sister of Mrs. Benedict, has been here for several weeks caring for her sister.
Hannah M. Davis Benedict was born at Ft. Jackson, New York, on August 17, 1840, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Davis. She was brought west when a child with her people who settled on a farm near Elgin. About 53 years ago she was married to Wallace Benedict and after two years near Dundee, they came to Barrington. For a long time they lived in the then Howarth building, now the Lipfosky building. No children were born to them and they have occupied their present residence for a long time.
Other relatives living are: Mrs. Melissa Houghtaling of Algonquin, Mrs. Mary Smith of Elgin and Mrs. Katherine Ingraham of Greene, Iowa, all sisters, and Mark Davis, also of Iowa.
