Martha was the daughter of Joseph Oliver Davis and Mary Ann Dean Davis. She was first married in Savannah on January 15, 1861 to Charles Legrande Cannon and had one child, Joseph Wynn Cannon. Charles, a Private in Company F of the 22nd Battalion GA Artillery, died in the Provo Hospital after being captured at Fort Pulaski. As a young widow, she married Melancthon Howard Cutter in Macon on October 20, 1870. They had three children: Howard Davis Cutter, Sr., Mary Annah Cutter Keiser, and William Henry Cutter.
