He was a distinguished architect, 1776 member of the Legislature for several years and a elector at the first three elections of President of the United States.

Thomas was a mechanic, and had rec'd a common school education. During the controversy with Great Britain he was made a Colonel of the Boston Regiment in 1773, serving until 1778.
