In 1861, Alvin joined the 16th Massachusetts Voluntary Infantry, Company D. He was captured In battle but was exchanged and returned to his unit. On July 2, 1863, near Emmitsburg Road, in the Battle of Gettysburg, Alvin was captured again by confederate forces, possibly from Alabama or Texas. After being a prisoner in Richmond and Belle Isle, he was sent to the infamous Andersonville Prison Camp near Americus, Georgia, where he died on October 22, 1864, just six months before the War ended. His brother, Henry Clay Adams, was also a prisoner at Andersonville, however, Henry survived and returned home after the War, where he married his brother's widow.
