(November 17, 1921 - September 4, 2013)

Franklin - Lucy Day Beale, 91, of Country Club Road, Franklin, Virginia, died at Southampton Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, September 4, 2013. Mrs. Beale was born in Bessemer, Alabama, her family moving to Franklin in 1927. She was predeceased by her parents, Lucy Tomlin and Frank Relph Day; her husband James Irving Beale III; and her brothers Frank Relph Day, Jr., James Spurgeon "Bud" Day, and McGowan Rice "Maxie" Day. She is survived by three sons: James Irving Beale IV and his wife Becky, Michael Clinton Beale, and Benjamin Day Beale and his wife Donna; three grandsons: Jonathan Tomlin Beale and his wife Carrie, Matthew McGowan Beale, and Jacob Lucas Beale; one granddaughter: Zoë Rivers Beale; and two great-grandchildren: Carter Grant Beale and Aubrie Elaine Beale. She is also survived by brother-in-law Frank Beale and wife Pat; sisters-in-law Anne Parmalee and Dot Day; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Beale was an active member of the Franklin Congregational Christian Church since 1948, taught Sunday School in the Adult Department for many years, and served faithfully on many Church committees. She graduated from Franklin High School, Class of 1940, attended Mary Washington College, and retired from Union Camp Corporation in 1984 as Personnel Supervisor, with 23 years of service. She had served on the Board of the Walter Cecil Rawls Regional Library and Museum, as Membership Chairman of the Southampton County Historical Society, was a member of the Franklin Book Club, and enjoyed playing in several Bridge Clubs. The family wishes to thank the Doctors and staff of Southampton Memorial Hospital and East Pavilion for their care of Mom through these last few years, and her many friends for all their cards and visits. Even through the debilitations of Alzheimer's, she remained contented. A kinder, sweeter woman and devoted mother and grandmother could not be found. The family will receive friends at Wright Funeral Home on Saturday evening, September 7, 2013, from 7 to 9 PM. Graveside services will be held at Poplar Spring Cemetery in Franklin at 2 PM on Sunday, September 8, 2013, with the Rev. James Hyatt officiating. A reception will follow at Franklin Congregational Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to Franklin Congregational Christian Church at 412 North High Street, Franklin, Virginia or a charity of your choosing. www.wrightfuneralhome.org
