ABINGDON, Va. Hazel Day Atkins, 91, of Abingdon, went to be with the Lord Thursday, March 22, 2012, at the home of her daughter. She was born March 6, 1921, in Johnson City, Tenn. and was the last surviving child of the late Margaret Collins Day and James Anderson Day. She resided in Abingdon all of her adult life and was preceded in death by her husband, AJ "Jack" Atkins; daughter, Janice Atkins Sproles; and infant son, Richard Eugene Atkins. Surviving are her son, Jerry Wayne Atkins; daughter, Jackie Atkins Godbey and husband, Mark; grandchildren, Robin Snead Weatherly, Becky Sue Snead, Pennie Snead Winters, Kimberly Dawn Atkins, David Alex Atkins, Jared Benjamin Godbey, Andrew Wellington Godbey and Adara Elizabeth Godbey; great-grandchildren, Logan Sammons, Christopher Winters and wife, Kaitlin, Katelin Winters, Hunter Atkins, Cheyenne Godbey, Abigail Godbey, and Ryan Godbey; and great-great-grandson, Lane Winters. The family would like to say a special thank you to her extended family and friends at Green Spring Rest Home for the love and care shown to Hazel. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 24, 2012, at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with the Rev. Jerry A. Eggers and Pastor Anthony Harris officiating.
