Prior to entering the state hospital Maude was living at the Masonic Home in Forest Grove, Oregon (25 miles west of Portland). The Masonic and Eastern Star Home for the State of Oregon which was built "for the aged and infirm, and the poor and distressed worthy Master Masons, their widows and orphans . . ." The property is now the McMenamins Grand Lodge, a hotel and event center.
On 12/28/1953 Maude was admitted to the Oregon State Hospital, a residential facility in Salem, Oregon for the treatment of people with mental illness. After being a patient at the institution for 8 1/2 years she died there of heart problems. She was also diagnosed with cerebral arteriosclerosis with psychotic reaction.
