Sister Gertrude Martin Delaney, 86, embraced death on Tuesday, December 10 in Jolenta Convent after a long illness. Sister, the former Mary Catherine Delaney, and daughter of the late Gertrude Auinlan and Martin Joseph Delaney, was born in Syracuse, New York. She was a sister of St. Francis for 66 years. Sister graduated from St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing in Utica, New York and received a bachelor's and master's degree in Nursing from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Sister also was certified in Advanced Studies for Operating Room Services. Sister's ministries included being a nurse, nurse educator and operating room nursing supervisor at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Utica, New York for 26 years, serving the leper patients in Kalaupapa, Molokai for four years and brief positions at Mercy Rehab Center in Auburn, Maria Regina College, and Directress of St. Anthony Infirmary. Sister had outstanding leadership and nursing qualities. She was compassionate, caring, sympathetic, and empathetic to the sick and suffering, especially those about to undergo surgery. Her sense of humor and beautiful smile will be remembered by those to whom she ministered. For many years, sister was a resident of Jolenta Convent where she ministered to many from her wheelchair by listening, praying, and understanding ways. She endeared herself to the sisters with whom she lived and with the staff who provided for her care. Sister is survived by several cousins and the Sisters of St. Francis. Calling hours will be Tuesday, December 17 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the St. Anthony Convent Solarium, 1024 Court Street, Syracuse. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, December 17, at 7 p.m. in the St. Anthony Convent Chapel in Syracuse. A farewell service will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 18 at the convent chapel. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
