Martha Frances Denmark was born circa 1846 (from census) in Lowndes county, Georgia, a daughter of John Denmark and Meurning/Morning (Hagin) Denmark. Martha is found on the United States census of 1850, at the age of four years, living with her parents in Georgia. By the next census (1860) her family had moved to Taylor county, Florida, where she is found as a twelve-year-old, living with her parents. (Note: her mother's name is spelled "Morenin" on this census)

In 1866, Martha married William Ernest Goodman born in 1845, in Florida, a son of Henry E. Goodman and Elizabeth (Spain) Goodman. William died in 1877, in Madison county, Florida. Martha is found on the United States Census of 1880 as Martha "Gerdman" and she is living with her brother J. Newton Denmark and his wife "Vicy" in Taylor county, Florida, with five children, ages 5-13
