Born in Cincinnati, he was the son of John B. and Mary (Mosconi) Devote. He was baptized Dominick Bartholomew Devoto in 1861; ref. Hamilton County Genealogical Society baptism records.
In lieu of Dominick, he used the name John, or John B., in Cincinnati's 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses.
John and his brother, Louis, operated a grocery in CIncinnati. In 1885 the Devote Bros. Grocery had two retail sales locations, one on Madisonville Pike and one in Walnut Hills (see photo excerpt of their Cincinnati City Directory listing).
Louis, the informant on John's 1929 death certificate, used the name Dominick at that time.
