According to the History of Santa Clara County, California: including its geography, geology, and topography, he was born in Royalston, Massachusetts, to Ebenezer Wheeler DEXTER and Rachel RICH Dexter. Albert worked for a period of time as a whaler in Massachusetts before moving to Posey County, Indiana. He was not successful in Indiana, and left on foot for St. Louis with only $13 in his pocket. In 1846, he constructed a wagon, and in the Spring of the following year he started to cross the plains to Oregon. He worked in Oregon for two years, employed by the Hudson Bay Company. In 1848, being fired by the discovery of gold in California, he proceeded to that state and mined on the American River for one year. While there, he and his party of nine men were attacked by Native Americans and seven in his group were put to death. Albert and 22 others later chased the band they believed had attacked them, and exacted their revenge. Albert settled in Santa Clara county in the winter of 1849.

Albert was married on March 12, 1850, to Ellen DAVIS, a native of Ross county, Ohio.

They had the following children:

Wheeler D. DEXTER (1853)
William Harry DEXTER (1854)
Albert L. DEXTER (1859)
Otis L. DEXTER (1861)
