"Mrs. Bertha Dickens. Mrs. Bertha Banschbach Dickens, 80, of Amboy, Lee county, the widow of Adrian Charles Dickens, nephew of the famous English author, died yesterday in Manteno State hospital. She leaves a daughter, Mrs. E. W. Schweder of Lexington, Ky.; two sons, H. B. Dickens of Des Moines, Ia., and Earl of Fort Lauderdale, Fla; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Cemetery records state that Bertha Dickens and her husband Adrian Charles Dickens are buried in this Prairie Repose Cemetery, but no gravestones for them were found on an August 2015 visit.

Bertha Dickens was born in Illinois, father born Germany, mother born Illinois. She may have been living near Amboy, Illinois when she married Adrian Dickens, because their first two children were born in Amboy. At the 1900 census, Adrian and Bertha Dickens lived in Chicago, where he worked for railroads. At the 1930 census, widowed, she lived in Chicago, Illinois. At the 1940 census, she lived in Des Moines, Iowa with her son Harold Bertram Dickens. Her name appears in the 1944 Des Moines City Directory, but it is no longer listed in 1946. Her death in 1950 was at the Manteno State Hospital near Manteno, Illinois.
