A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lancaster July 4, 1863, mustered into state service at Harrisburg July 9 as a private with Co. F, 47th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company August 13, 1863. The regiment was one of many emergency units organized during the Gettysburg crisis, but it saw no action.
