He was born Nov. 29, 1933, in Harvey, Ill., to the late Edwin and Lillian Doll. He lived in Memphis most of his life. He was a member of the Egypt Road Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school. He was a captain with the Memphis Fire Department, retiring in 1989. He also served in the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of the Memphis Police Department and a deputy with the Scott County, Tenn., Sheriff's Department.
He enjoyed reading, history and collecting big band albums.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. today at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. Tommy Whaley officiating. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean Laxton Doll of Memphis, whom he married in 1981; one son, Robert Doll of Houston, Texas; two stepsons, Rickey Hood of West Monroe, La., and Gregory Hood of Boca Raton, Fla.; one daughter, Carolyn Doll of Navarre, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Melissa Hood of Memphis and Patricia North of West Monroe, La.; one sister, Carolyn Doll Pontius of Memphis; 15 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two special companions, Sara Elizabeth and Zachery Michael.
Pallbearers will be Rickey Hood, Gregory Hood, Zachery Blades, Michael Flesner, Brad Kennedy and Steven Kennedy.
Brian Flesner will be an honorary pallbearer.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to service time today at the funeral home.
