On April 25, 1917 he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was a Private in the 309th Infantry 8th Division Co H when he was Killed in Action in the second phase of the Battle of the Argonne Forest in France. In this phase the famous Lost Battalion was rescued and the famous Corporal (later Sergeant) Alvin York captured 132 German soldiers.
Thomas was killed during the Battle of Montfaucon, one of many frontal assaults they made to break thru the German defenses. Through their efforts, less than a month after his death, the war came to an end on Nov 11th.
Thomas's two brothers, Hazen and Earl, made it safely home from the war.
